The 5th annual Cops & Burgers fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics Nevada took place on Sunday, June 3 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. The weather provided for a fantastic turnout and the 5-hour event raised approximately $12,000. All of the money donated will stay in Northern Nevada to support the many sports training and competition events held throughout the year for the Special Olympics Nevada athletes. Several athletes and their family members were on hand for all of the fun, food and show-n-shine car show excitement which also provided a very visual event for all to see how local law enforcement officers raise money for this organization throughout the year. The athletes played a big role in identifying five classic cars and presented those owners with a winning plaque. Other accolades for the annual car show included the Governor’s Choice, Law Enforcement’s Choice, Save Mart’s Choice, Mayor’s Choice (2) and the Nevada Air National Guard Commander’s Choice awards.
This year’s event yielded 147 registered cars for the show-n-shine and nearly 500 burgers were served by law enforcement officers and their family members. The festivities included a K-9 demonstration by the Sparks Police Department and several agencies provided static displays of various types of police equipment. We are so pleased that we exceeded last year’s amount by almost $2,000 and will be starting the planning process for next year’s event in the very near future.
