Among the defining acts of the synth-pop and new wave movement, Soft Cell helped reshape popular music with its pioneering blend of electronic production, soulful vocals and bold, emotional songwriting. Formed in Leeds, England, in 1978 by vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball, Soft Cell achieved worldwide success with its iconic 1981 rendition of "Tainted Love." The song became one of the best-selling singles of all time, spending a record-breaking 43 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching No. 1 in multiple countries.
