Grand Sierra Resort and Casino expands security team with Knightscope K5 autonomous security robot
RENO, Nev. (June 15, 2021) – Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR) is expanding its security team with the addition of the Knightscope K5 Autonomous Security Robot (ASR). Featuring the latest in security technology, the K5 includes multiple cameras with a 360-degree field of view, two-way communication ability, thermal imaging and an emergency call button. Named “Jackbot” by GSR team members, the newest member of GSR’s security team is the first ASR in a Northern Nevada casino and will provide an extra set of eyes and ears around the property, as well as provide guests with an additional peace of mind.
Originally founded in response to the tragic events at Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon, Knightscope founders believed that with a unique combination of hardware, software and humans, they could greatly reduce crime by as much as 50%. Knightscope’s technologies excel at monotonous, computationally heavy and sometimes dangerous work, which, combined with humans’ decision-making and situational analysis, is a game changer for security everywhere.
“The safety of our guests and team members is of the utmost importance and we are very grateful to be the first casino-resort in Northern Nevada to have the Knightscope K5 as an added measure to keep our property safe,” says GSR General Manager Shannon Keel. “We continue to be the leader in the implementation of safety measures, as we’ve recently activated our Special Response Team of professionally trained, highly experienced security officers and roving K-9 patrols to deliver unequalled hospitality and premium guest experiences while ensuring a safe environment across the resort.”
The K5 ASR visually observes its surroundings through the use of video cameras and a thermal camera. While the ASRs are unique in appearance and delivery system, the security service they provide is commonly accepted in the public domain with fixed security camera systems. The K5 proactively seeks out anomalies that might suggest criminal activity, such as people in restricted areas, and alerts GSR’s security personnel on duty upon pressing a duress button.
The K5 operates within a predefined geo-fenced area but does not rely solely on one sensor to determine its current location and plot a directional path. It utilizes data from multiple sensors, including LIDAR, GPS, inertial and wheel odometry sensors, to develop a complete picture of its environment and determine a position within those boundaries. The ASR then carefully navigates, fully autonomously, along a random path seeking to thwart any wrongdoers.
