Celebrating the unique spirit of Virginia City – located just a short drive from Reno and Grand Sierra Resort – the International Camel and Ostrich Races have been part of the tradition and history of this historic Nevada town for more than 50 years.
It all began when a local newspaper editor put out a challenge to other local papers to enter their camel in a race down the main street of Virginia City. The Enterprise was known for telling tall tales and the challenge was not taken seriously. However, when the San Francisco Chronicle got wind of such an unusual race, they dared to call Richards’ bluff and showed up with camels. Others followed suit and the International Camel and Ostrich Races were born.
Grand Sierra Resort offers the perfect base for exploring nearby Virginia City.
