Grand Sierra Resort and Casino honors a California nurse as August’s “Grand Hero”

RENO, Nev. (Sept. 20, 2022) – Samantha Cortez, Woodland, Calif., will head over the hill to enjoy a weekend of fun and relaxation at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR). The emergency room nurse is the property’s latest “Grand Hero.”

Throughout the last two years, Cortez has been on the frontlines navigating the difficulties of COVID. From assisting patients to supporting their families, she goes the extra mile to show her dedication and care, all while picking up extra shifts when the hospital is short staffed. Throughout the pandemic, she worked full time to take care of her family, even after becoming pregnant with her second child. She’s never one to complain and puts everyone before herself. Cortez’s coworkers describe her as selfless, committed and a hero.

Cortez will be treated to a two-night stay at GSR, $200 in dining credits and a $200 spa gift card. She plans on taking the trip over the hill with her husband.

The “Grand Hero” initiative was introduced in March 2021. Community members are asked to nominate deserving healthcare workers, first responders, teachers and other everyday heroes to receive a relaxing resort vacation as an expression of thanks for their efforts in supporting the local community throughout the past year.

Community members can nominate everyday heroes for GSR’s “Grand Hero” program by visiting grandsierraresort.com/gsr-cares. GSR will select a winner once a month and will reward the chosen hero with a complimentary two-night stay at Northern Nevada’s premier resort destination, a food and beverage credit to use at the wide variety of restaurants featured throughout the casino-resort and a spa certificate for The Spa at Grand Sierra Resort.
