For nearly six decades, Tower of Power has delivered the best in funk and soul music. Formed in Oakland in the late 1960s by Emilio Castillo and Rocco Prestia, the group began as a soul band called The Motowns before saxophonist Stephen “Doc” Kupka joined in 1968 and the band adopted its now-iconic name. East Bay Grease helped define the group’s signature sound and led to a deal with Warner Bros. Records, while their 1972 album “Bump City” became a hit on both the Billboard 200 and R&B Albums chart, featuring “You’re Still a Young Man” and “Down to the Nightclub.” The band followed with enduring classics including “So Very Hard to Go” and “What Is Hip?” and continued to tour and record throughout the decades.
Tower of Power has built a remarkable legacy not only through its own catalog, but also through collaborations and performances with legendary artists including Otis Redding, Elton John, Santana, the Grateful Dead, John Lee Hooker, Aerosmith and Bonnie Raitt. Known for its window-rattling grooves, dynamic horn arrangements and raucous party spirit, Tower of Power has helped define an unmistakable “Oakland soul” sound influenced by Oakland, Detroit, Memphis and Philadelphia.
