Blending punk roots, electronic innovation and satirical social commentary, Devo rose from Akron, Ohio, in the 1970s and became one of the most influential and idiosyncratic bands. Their breakthrough came with the 1980 album “Freedom of Choice,” which cracked the U.S. Top 25 and peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard 200. The album’s smash single “Whip It” soared to No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became a gold-certified anthem, cementing Devo’s place in music history. Alongside “Whip It,” tracks like “Girl U Want,” “Gates of Steel” and the title track “Freedom of Choice” helped define Devo’s signature synthesis of jagged guitar, robotic synths and darkly witty lyrics.
Their 1981 follow-up, “New Traditionalists,” continued to push boundaries, with memorable songs such as “Beautiful World” and “Through Being Cool” that showcased Devo’s evolution into more ambitious territory while maintaining their distinctive musical identity. The group continued to extensively tour while releasing new material until 1991 when they decided to take a hiatus and work on solo projects. Reconvening a few years later, Devo dipped their toes into new media and works, including the video game, movies and more while headlining the 1997 Lollapolloza. In 2010, Devo released their ninth studio album, and first in two decades, “Something for Everybody,” showing their signature sound and catchy lyrics still stood the test of time.
Across decades of recording and touring, Devo has remained committed to innovation, performance art and cultural commentary. The group has gone on to influence generations of artists across new wave, synth‑pop, punk and electronic music. Their music continues to resonate as explorations of technology, society and human behavior, ensuring every live show remains a unique experience for fans old and new. Doors open at 7 p.m.
